Many experiences come with dog ownership, and one of the most common and inevitable is a dog urinating where it should not. It does not matter how well trained or well behaved the dog is; accidents happen. Dogs tend to urinate suddenly as a sign of submission or stress: perhaps someone's presence suddenly excited the dog or it finds car rides stressful? No matter the situation, it helps to be prepared.

Step 1

Blot--do not rub--to soak up the urine spot with a towel, pressing hard to remove as much urine as possible.

Step 2

Mix a solution of one part vinegar to one-to-two parts warm water in the bucket. Pour the mixture onto the spot where the dog urinated, just enough to cover the area plus an inch or two on each side. Let soak for one minute before blotting to soak up the mix as thoroughly as possible.

Step 3

Follow the instructions on the back of the commercial active enzyme pet mess cleaning solution. Make sure it is safe for use on upholstery and colored carpeting before application.

Sprinkle baking soda on the spot once it is dry. Allow it to sit overnight, vacuuming up the baking soda the next day.
